THIS WEEK'S ANNOUNCEMENTS
July 14, 2024
July 14, 2024
Here are the announcements from NOVA’s July 14 liturgy:
Upcoming events/Dates to remember
Sunday, July 28 — Nova update, after liturgy, at Kenmore
Sunday, Aug. 25 — PAX liturgy with Joe Nangle, 9 am, in McLean
Friday, Sept. 6-Sept. 8 — Nova retreat, in Maryland
Saturday, Oct. 12 — Liturgy workshop with Francis Gargani, 2-5 pm, Washington DC
Announcements
1) Nova update meeting July 28 — Meg Tuccillo and Jeanne Clarkson let us know that the community will hold a 30-minute “update” meeting after liturgy at Kenmore on Sunday, July 28.
2) Book group to be rescheduled— A meeting of the Nova book group had been scheduled for July 28. However, Cathy Goldschmidt sent word via email that she has fallen and has a vertebral fracture and feels unable to host the gathering. At liturgy this morning, it was briefly discussed and decided it would be better to reschedule the session to another date in the future. Stay tuned.
3) PAX liturgy with Joe Nangle — PAX has sent an invitation to Nova to join them for a liturgy with Fr. Joe Nangle presiding. The date is Sunday Aug. 25, 9 am, at St Luke Catholic Church in McLean. It’s possible there will be coffee and discussion following the liturgy, which will be Zoomed (the liturgy, not the discussion).
4) Nova's YouTube videos — Dianne Carroll noted that Nova’s videos, which are available on YouTube, are unlisted (i.e., not easy to find for the general public). She sent an email Saturday with a link to Nova’s page on YouTube with 17 different videos, covering a variety of community events. You can find Dianne’s email or you could click on this link: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLE0rRU3i8VXjIzzS28ktu7kWTl3aaLz2p
5) Poor People’s Campaign election effort — Tom Clarkson reminded the community that he has sent out information regarding the Poor People’s Campaign’s effort to promote participation in the upcoming elections. You can get involved in that effort. For the full text of Tom’s announcement (and two others, on the jobs guarantee and garden work for Ronaldo), see below.
6) Save the date Oct. 12 liturgy workshop — John Mooney let us know about a liturgy workshop that Fr. Francis Gargani has invited us to, from 2 to 5 pm, on Saturday, October. 12. It will be held at the Redemptorist Provincial House, where Francis lives, in Northeast DC. More details to come later.
7) Nova’s annual retreat — Jeanne reminded us about the dates for the Nova retreat, Sept. 6 — Sept. 8, to be held at the Bon Secours retreat house in Maryland. Fr. Ken Himes will be the facilitator. For complete info about the retreat and how to sign up, look for Anne Passin’s email to the community sent on July 8 (actually, two emails!)
8) Food for AFAC — Keep those boxes of cold cereal (and other food donations) coming! Nova has been connected with the Arlington Food Assistance Center for all of its 35-year existence. Summer is a time when many Arlington families need more help (because school is out and children don’t have access to school-provided breakfast and lunch). AFAC is now serving more than 3,700 families every week. Please bring a box or two of cold cereal, or peanut butter, canned tuna, canned soup (in pop-top cans), plain pasta or canned beans.
Next Sunday’s presider and planners will be Fr. Gino Correa, OFM, and Cece and Kopp Michelotti. The scribe for announcements is scheduled to be Cathy Goldschmidt, but that may change. Be prepared to give (or send electronically) written copies of announcements made to the scribe.

2. GARDEN WORK FOR RONALDO
Ronaldo Vail (father of our refugee family from Guatemala) has resumed working at Target four days a week; however, his schedule at Target varies. Please call Ronaldo directly at 731-618-1459 to set up a time. He welcomes extra work around the garden and home. Please click here for directions to his home.
3. POOR PEOPLE’S CAMPAIGN
As we know, the goal of the Poor People’s Campaign is to gain electoral votes in swing states by getting more poor and low-income voters to the polls in 2024 than in 2020. Therefore, it makes sense for us to concentrate our canvassing efforts on Virginia. See Point 1) below for a good way to canvass in Virginia. For other ways to get out the vote in Virginia and in other places see Point 2) below.
1) So far, the best canvassing effort that I’ve come across is the NAACP Arlington branch’s voter engagement effort this summer. They provide voting information/services to residents of affordable housing properties, at their doors. The coordinator for this effort is a lady named Benedetta (Detta) Kissel. She is extremely well organized and will provide you with all the material that you need to canvass at her events.
a) She would like our group (NOVA Catholic, PAX, and TNT4RJ) to canvass Gates of Ballston – on or about Aug 28. This is a huge complex (464 units) which is a garden apartment complex. It gets hot and there are stairs, so it is not easy going. She could use at least 8 people to do that complex. More would be better. But it has many residents who are primarily Spanish speakers, so we'd need to recruit some canvassers who can communicate in Spanish. Please let me know asap if you’re available that day. Unfortunately, I’ll be away at the end of August.
b) Detta needs help at the Apex building-- Set for July 25 (256 units). One person, a Spanish speaker, has signed up for this event. It is inside with elevators, so pretty easy going. Sign up here.
c) Detta also needs help at the Arbor Heights building -- Proposed for Sept 9 (198 units). This is a garden apt complex--hot, and with stairs. Sign up here
d) Please visit this page to sign-up for one of her many other upcoming events. Spanish speakers can usually find a spot in one of her events.
e) If an event has enough volunteers but you’d like to go with one of her volunteers to learn how they canvass, Detta says that you can send her an email at [email protected] and ask her if you can join.
2) Please see this Google Document, “Ways to Reach Poor and Low-income Voters” for other ideas for canvassing, post carding, social media reaching, or phone-banking. Please add your ideas directly to this page so that we can all see them.
